About FaceTypes
A curated library of free and open-source fonts: hundreds of typeface families, previewed, credited and licence-checked, in one place.
Why
Good open type is scattered across Google Fonts, independent foundries, design schools and designers' GitHub pages. FaceTypes brings it together and adds editorial judgement: every font is chosen by hand, and the weaker ones are left out.
Buy type when you can
Typefaces take years to make. If a project has the budget, license one, and the Foundries page points to studios worth supporting. When it doesn't, good free type means better design everywhere.
How fonts are chosen
Every font is free to use and most are open source. Each is checked for its licence and Latin character set before it's added, and editors' picks are chosen by hand. Personal-use-only fonts and duplicates are left out. Each page credits the designer and links to the source.
The Identifier
Matches lettering in an image against the library. It runs in your browser; images are never uploaded or stored.
The legal bit
Licences
FaceTypes doesn't own or sell any of these typefaces; each belongs to its designer or foundry. Most use the SIL Open Font License or Apache 2.0, which allow commercial use. Each page states its licence, and the one supplied with the download is the one that applies, so read it before you use a font.
Downloads
Where a licence allows, fonts are hosted here. Otherwise FaceTypes shows a preview and links to the foundry.
No warranty
Details are checked carefully but can change. FaceTypes accepts no liability for how fonts are used; if it matters, check the licence at the source.
Links to sources
FaceTypes only links to a font's designer, its foundry or an official open-source host, never to sites that re-post fonts. We check every source carefully, but some sites give away paid fonts as "free". If a link here ever leads to a font shared without its designer's permission, please email hello@facetypes.co.uk and we'll remove it immediately.
Corrections
Designer or foundry and something's wrong, or you'd like a font removed? Email hello@facetypes.co.uk and it'll be fixed promptly.
Privacy
No accounts, ads or tracking. Favourites and settings stay in your browser. Some fonts load from Google Fonts, which sees the usual details of any web request. See the privacy policy.
